Yikes, it IS about the Journey
I love a holiday week - especially when excessive baking is not only acceptable but encouraged (and borderline required). One thing I typically don’t enjoy is the pressure of making the most delicious baked goods that my family has ever had the privilege of eating. This is purely a self-imposed expectation, but usually leads me to feel slightly stressed and frustrated if what I’m making doesn’t turn out the way I want.
This week, though, I had a breakthrough. I made a batch of cookies that was incredibly…average. The flavor fell wayyy short of my expectations. The strange thing was that I didn’t really care?? I just laughed and moved on. I was truly so excited about the opportunity to spend a day baking that I didn’t really care about the result. I finally reached a point of peace with the process. I know that I’m still being creative, I’m still a good baker, and one bad batch doesn’t change that.
Indeed, if anyone is counting cliches, this week’s ‘flutter’ is another one for the tracker - look for joy in the process of whatever you’re doing. If you only find joy within a certain result, your happiness will be fleeting at best and nonexistent at worst.
